Home Schooling

There has been a recent increase in parent interest in home schooling their children. This is a definite indicator of a lack of confidence in government’s K-12 Education Re-entry Plan. Home schooling should not be confused with the work from home instruction and at home learning support that occurred from March 16 to the end of the 2019-20 school year. Parents wishing to home school their children, in accordance with sections 6 and 7 of the Schools Act, 1997 and school district policies (NLESD Policy 312: Home Schooling), are required to make application to the Director of Education. Parents who home school must outline the curriculum their child will follow and demonstrate that they are capable of teaching or providing teaching for that curriculum. Under home schooling requirements, parents take full responsibility for curriculum materials and instruction. The school district is still required to provide some oversight and assessment of a home schooled student’s progress.
