NLTA SADDENED BY DEATH OF PAST PRESIDENT

St. John’s, NL… The Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers’ Association wishes to express its sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Brother Joseph Darcy who passed away on October 16. Brother Darcy was President of the NTA from 1959-60.

“Brother Darcy was a significant influence in the history of the Association,” says Dean Ingram, President of the NLTA. “He served in many capacities and worked tirelessly for education in this province and around the world.”

Brother Darcy received his early education at St. Bonaventure’s College and joined the Congregation of Christian Brothers in 1936. He served as President of St. Bon’s at the same time that he was President of the NTA. During an historical interview with the NLTA in 2012 Brother Darcy spoke of his fond memories working on behalf of teachers and how he enjoyed travelling and writing. He was the author of several books which included an award-winning play and a musical drama based on the building of the Basilica.
